German Shepherd puppies SC, you say? Enter DogSmith Purebreds, your premier breeder of first-class German Shepherd puppies in South Carolina. We are passionate about this breed and all it offers in the work zone as well as in the home.

German Shepherd puppies SC – Climate

The short-haired German Shepherd does well in just about any climate. Its agile body and moderate size helps keep it active even when the temperatures climb to summer-time heights. Its short, double coat is dense enough to protect its skin, but short enough to not be too much of a burden. The long-haired German Shepherd does surprisingly well in warm temperatures, also, though these dogs understandably need a bit more TLC when exposed to heat for long periods of time, especially if they have dark pigmentation in their fur.

German Shepherd puppies SC – Terrain

Though perhaps not bred for water (like the Labrador retriever), German Shepherds are adaptable for many different conditions, especially when started young. We have had more than one German Shepherd puppy learn to retrieve both in and out of the water when worked next to a Labrador retriever. They are quick to learn the ropes and no good Shepherd wants to be left behind! If you live next to the South Carolina coast with your German Shepherd puppy, they will not only love the water, but walking on sand is good for their feet. Who knew?

Let’s not forget about the beauties of upstate South Carolina, either. “Fields and forests, vales and mountains,” the upstate South Carolina has it all! Take your German Shepherd puppy SC out for a run in the farm fields, or let them join in on a hike in the mountains. Do be careful, however, not to overdo the exercise your German Shepherd puppy gets during the first 6 months of life, as this can damage their joint health.

German Shepherd puppies SC – Country or City

Are you a lover of the countryside? South Carolina has many beautiful rural areas in which your new German Shepherd companion will thrive. Whether as a pet or a livestock or herding dog, German Shepherds will find plenty of activity in South Carolina’s beautiful upstate or low-country.

Maybe you live in the city: Greenville, SC, Columbia, SC, Charleston, SC, or another highly-populated area. Not to worry!

Shepherds do well when trained to walk on a leash and can be taken many places in public all throughout the state. When socialized and trained properly, crowds can be maneuvered with ease for both the dog and the handler. The military and police have used these dogs in high-stress activities for many years with great success. There are also trainers who work personal protection dogs to keep you safe anywhere, so don’t be afraid to bring a German Shepherd puppy home because of potential encounters with crowds. With the right training, your new companion can succeed in any setting, and so can you.

German Shepherd puppies SC – Apartment or home

Along the lines of city or country life, perhaps you are concerned that you live in a place that is good for a German Shepherd (as you should be). A single-family home is definitely preferable, ideally with a fenced-in yard where your new German Shepherd puppy can play safely. However, if this is not your location don’t feel that owning a German Shepherd puppy is out of the realm of possibly for you.

These dogs adapt well to many situations and with a dedicated handler can thrive in tighter quarters. If you live in an apartment, you will definitely want to plan plenty of leashed walks and visits to the dog park to help your German Shepherd expend its energy, and maybe make a few friends in the process.
