English Lab vs American Lab – 2 key differences

English Lab vs American Lab

Many people wonder, what are the differences between the English Lab vs American Lab? While it is not an official breed difference, there are some distinct differences that get lumped together under these different labels.

Types of Labradors

The English Lab is also known as the show line lab. These dogs are shown in conformation circles for breed correctness. Physical features are analyzed heavily, especially the head, tail, and overall structure.

English labs ought to have large, blocky heads. Their heads are almost square, so the term “blocky” actually fits quite well. Their tails are referred to as otter tails, meaning they present in a straight-out fashion. They should not curl up toward the dog’s back.

Generally, English-type labs will be rather stocky. They have a deep chest and broad back, and they carry a lot of extra loose skin and yes, sometimes fat. This is all part of their charming, teddybear appearance. A healthy English lab will often be accused of being overweight by those who are only accustomed to seeing the type known as “American.”

Speaking of which, American labs are used most often for hunting activities. They are known as the working line of Labradors. There are competitions for these dogs also, but not for physical conformation. Rather, American labs will generally compete in field trials.

They tend to be lean and a bit lanky, featuring narrow heads and long legs (at least, compared to their beauty-pageant cousins). Because conformation is a second thought in breeding, if a thought at all, American labs will often look out of proportion. They lack the eye-catching finesse of the English lab.

Temperaments in the English Lab vs American Lab

The build and appearance of the lab should not affect its personality. In truth, it doesn’t even affect its ability and drive to retrieve. English labs are often used for hunting, and American labs can lay around and pretend to be beautiful. Both have moderately high energy, and both are equally included in the ranks of the best family dog ever.

American Lab Puppy

These pups are far more common (aka easy to come by) than their English counterparts, simply because the standards are typically lower in the raising of them. As a very general rule, you can expect to pay less for an American lab puppy than you would for an English lab puppy. While there are surely quality American lab puppies to be had, the highest level of excellence is in the English-style Labrador retriever. While you’re in your quest for excellence, be sure to check out this article with helpful tips on choosing a puppy.
